Abstract
This study aims to examine whether the mental illness stigma among mental health professionals(MHP) can affect sheltered workshop program(SWP) service utilization of individuals with mental illness(MI) in the long-termcare mental institutions(LCMI) using the extended Anderson model(AM). Given the fact that the AM has been expanded to take into account the context of service use, it is necessary to examine whether the stigma of MHP of LCMI can affects service use of individuals with MI serviced by the LCMI. As very fewAM studies have examined the use of SWP services among individuals with MI served by LCMI so far, however, little is known about whether the stigma of MHP of LCMI can affect SWP service utilization of individuals with MI served by the LCMI. This study used a survey data collected from 1,052 individuals with MI served by 35 LCMI. Logistic hierarchical linear modeling was conducted to analyze the nested data. Key findings are as follows. First, at the individual level, higher support from others, lower self-stigma, and more rejection experience were associated with more utilization of SWP service. Second, at the organizational level, those serviced by LCMIwith higher MI stigmaof MHP were less likely to use SWP service. Based on these findings, practical implications for the stigma of MHP in LCMI and rehabilitation for individuals served by the LCMI were discussed.
